How are food processed in a manufacturing environment?

Food processing is quite common and essential in the modern times, even back in the earliest food processing techniques were discovered, it has been a massive help for people. Food processing helps people improve their situations and issues from:

  •          Food Contamination or Food Spoilage as to food processing methods like the use of properly sealed containers and food preservatives, help prolong the expiration of food.
  •         An easy, safe and cheap access for food anywhere. Though it’s common to see households cook their own food. People do not always have time to prepare their own food and find ingredients for it. And in simpler cases sometimes it’s just not smart to prepare your own food as it takes time and sometimes it’s not cost-efficient to prepare for it by small servings.
  •        Manufactured foods are useful for those who are travelling and storing food for if you don’t plan on not consuming it immediately.
  •          Processed food is also reliable as an emergency food supply, or when you prepare for disasters, processed food come in very handy.
  •          Food Mass Production

Now that we know the purpose that processed food commonly serves, but how are the food being processed?

Food processing practices and techniques usually involves:

  •          Food Preservation, the process of using preservatives such as salt and other additives to prevent food from immediate spoilage, especially combined with proper packaging and temperature control, the food processed this way could last for a very very long time.
  •          Packaging, the process of properly packing food to avoid food contamination from the outside. One of the products of these that are commonly found today in supermarkets or stores is canned goods.
  •          Refrigeration, the process of freezing temperature control where you freeze the food to lessen the risk of food contamination. As we know this isn’t only limited to food industry where the stored meat or ingredients used are frozen, as homes also have their own refrigerator and the convenience it provides cannot be denied.

They are among one of the few food processing methods used to improve our food experience and provide a solution to some of our food-related issues.

The application of the practice of food processing may not end for a long time. And people would continually improve its standards for the people who will continually consume the food from food manufacturing companies. So it’s only logical for upcoming and established food manufacturing businesses to keep up with the food safety standards for manufacturing.

Importance of Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene for Manufacturing

Food manufacturing industry has an undeniable effect in improving the lives of countless people in these modern times. Since food manufacturing serve as another source of food provided for people, making sure that the food is handled properly should be given attention of.

The importance of implementing food and safety standard for manufacturing isn’t child’s play. The consequences may end up catastrophic, considering the amount of people and how much a part of people’s lives food manufactured food is.

Just applying the Level 1 Food Safety & Hygiene for Manufacturing training is not enough. Having the Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene for Manufacturing should also be done for extra precaution and care when it comes to handling food for food industries.

The course will benefit anyone working in food processing, manufacturing, food assembly, packing and food storage. Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene for Manufacturing involves maintaining the workplace food safety standards in for food manufacturing.

Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene for Manufacturing cover the following:

  • Legislation – the laws and regulation that are set-up by the government for the standards of food safety for manufacturing.
  • Food safety and hygiene hazards – the common hazards for food and safety.
  • Temperature control - the proper ways to avoid food contamination or food spoilage through temperature control.
  • Refrigeration, chilling and cold holding – the proper ways of the following method to avoid food contamination or food spoilage.
  • Cooking, hot holding and reheating.
  • Food handling – information about how the personnel of the food manufacturing workplace should handle food.
  • Principles of safe food storage – the optimal way of storing food for cleanliness and quality assurance.
  • Cleaning – proper cleaning of the workplace of the food manufacturing to avoid food contamination

As simple as food safety and hygiene for food manufacturing is, it is undoubtedly important not just because it’s a legal obligation or a moral obligation but rather the damage with ignorance to food safety and hygiene may be too much for the company to withstand. So rather than risking such scary possible loses the food business would acquire from negligence.

Regardless if you are the owner or the employer or just an employee, being part of a food manufacturing company, you are responsible for those consume the food your produce. This may sound odd but with the lives that will consume the food you produce you will be responsible for the food-related incident that will happen upon them if you do not follow the standards of food safety and hygiene for manufacturing.

Why is Fire Safety Training Important?

Fire outbreaks in residential areas, work environment fires, and ecological fires, for example, bush fires result in extreme and deadly wounds.

Fires likewise prompt property misfortune, mental pain, and now and then death toll. Numerous studies

have distinguished fire safety as a method for expanding general fire safety learning and enhancing their reaction to a fire outbreak with the point of diminishing the quantity of flame-related losses.

Regardless of fire safety training programs being as of now accessible, it is vague why reports
demonstrate an absence of fire safety information, postponed danger acknowledgments, and deferred
departure among the general group, particularly among the youth and adults.

These discoveries warrant the need to explore the degree to which fire safety training is given and the level of fire safety knowledge among the people.

Being involved in a fire outbreak can be a staggering experience and the outcomes can be troubling and deadly. A few studies have sketched out the significance of fire safety training in the community`s part in the counteractive action and readiness to manage a fire problem.

It is along these lines crucial that the group is given a training to hold a satisfactory level of knowledge on fire safety and the how respond to such occurrence. It is likewise critical that individuals hold a satisfactory level of learning about the significance of keeping up useful fire-fighting equipment.

In any case, numerous studies have uncovered that the general group does not hold a satisfactory level of fire safety information and acts hazardously (e.g., leaving cooking unattended or putting combustible material excessively near the warmer), which puts them at more serious danger of undergoing such outbreak.

It has likewise been demonstrated that younger people and more adults particularly need adequate fire safety education and act in ways which puts them at more serious danger of flame related blazes or worse, death. This has eventuated in these people having a higher casualty rate than other age brackets. These age groups could have a more serious danger in view of their lessened capacity to react precisely in the case of a fire outbreak which could be a result of their restricted intellectual limit, data preparing capacity, and capacity to conceptualize data accurately. This danger further complements the significance and adequacy of fire safety training.

Take Reponsibility on Fire Safety

Everybody has responsibilities. From personal and private responsibilities like maintaining a good relationship with your family, spouse/husband and friends to responsibilities that you have for work. And even responsibilities that you have for the society, the world and the future!

In industries and workplaces there are tons of responsibilities for individual. Employers and/or supervisors have the responsibility to make sure that the workplace is organized and functioning as it is, team leaders need to make sure the employee do what they are supposed to and sent before the deadline, employees too have the responsibility to make sure they carry out the tasks appointed to them.

Now this isn’t just the sole responsibility people in the workplace have. It is important that the people from the workplace have assurance that they are far from any kind of harm and hazards found there if possible. One of these workplace incident related issues are fire incidents.

Fire incidents usually involved with people accidentally setting fire to flammable substances or the environment triggering these flammable substances to cause fire. And there are a lot of flammable materials and substances everywhere. Homes and workplaces have all kinds of things that could cause fires.

Employers and employees need to be aware of the circumstances about fire incidents. Being ignorant about these matters could really cause problems in the event that a fire incident happens.

And fire safety training isn’t about just responding and possibly suppressing the ones the situation arises but also about means or ways to prevent it from happening and suiting the workplace environment as fire proof as ideally possible.

It’s not just workplaces that needs fire safety, even institutions like schools and universities usually ensures that the students and teachers are given fire drills every now and then to ensure that incase a disaster like one strikes. The damage will be minimized and possibly avoid harm with all the people being ready for it.

Research About Basic Fire Safety

Fire incidents have been one of the most common occurring incidents in workplaces and at home and it doesn’t matter where you live, it strikes anywhere and anytime. And if you are unprepared for fire incidents it may be your unfortunate undoing.

Employers are supposed to assure that the workplace is up to standard and they have people that are appointed for fire safety. As a matter of fact, it is the employer’s legal responsibility to ensure that according to The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Fire safety trainings can be time consuming and requires the one appointed to it to travel. Fortunately nowadays it has been increasingly popular that the training can be done through online of course as long as where you are getting the training from is certified by the organization that upholds the standards of fire safety.

For fire safety training here are the things that you have to take note of:
  • Identifying the flammable materials and substances that exist in the workplace
  • Identifying the different kind of fires and how to extinguish it
  • Proper use of equipment and tools for fire fighting
  • Learning the appropriate response and procedures in the event of a fire incident.
  • Assessment of the workplace environment

Also make sure to follow the latest standards and guidelines for fire safety and regularly update your risk assessment of the workplace.  For it is not enough that your employees just had the fire safety training you have to make sure that the training they had are up to standards. For not only there may be new information but also much more efficient ways and emerging technologies for firefighting.

Remember that employee training, work environment assessment and gearing for fire safety may have its costs and time but considering how dangerous fire incidents are these little things may save lives.

Learning Food Safety for Manufacturing

To understand the proper way of food handling practices is crucial most especially when it comes to food and beverage production. That’s why more and more organizations and institutions are coming out to educate people who are into food business. There are several factors that should be considered and thoroughly understood in order to fully produce goods with high quality. Here are some of the factors that one should consider when learning food safety for manufacturing goods.

First, one should understand about food hygiene. When we say good food hygiene, it means controlling harmful bacteria which can cause serious diseases. There are four ways on how to learn good food hygiene. (1) Cross-contamination is when bacteria are spread between food, surfaces or equipment. It is most likely to happen when raw food touches (or drips onto) ready-to-eat food, equipment or surfaces. (2) Cleaning, effective cleaning gets rid of bacteria on hands, equipment and surfaces. So it helps to stop harmful bacteria from spreading onto food. (3) Chilling, chilling food properly helps to stop harmful bacteria from growing and finally (4)  Cooking, thorough cooking kills harmful bacteria in food. So it is extremely important to make sure that food is cooked properly.

Second, one should know the responsibilities in food hygiene and safety. Third, one should know the terminology, signs and processes related to food safety. Fourth, one should learn how to recognize and avoid food poisoning. After which, one should also learn how to prevent contamination which is one of the most important factors to be considered other than recognizing and avoiding food poisoning. In addition, one should also learn how to preserve and control food. There are many ways on how to preserve food such as canning, salting, drying, pickling, and freezing. Other than preserving food, one should also learn the importance of the proper storage of food. Finally, one should also learn how to provide evidence to inspectors of appropriate training in food safety within the manufacturing environment.

The Importance of Food Safety for Manufacturing

Consumers have a right to anticipate the safety of their purchased goods. Consumers are also always rightful to voice out their opinions about the food control procedures as well as its quality. However, consumers, media, regulators, and industry tend to focus more solely on the product and not on the safety of its packaging when in fact, packaging is a critical component in the overall food safety process. Manufacturers must be extra cautious in producing the goods that consumers purchase.
Most manufacturers are aware of the impact of faulty packaging on their businesses. They know that malfunctioning packaging and mistakes in the supply chain affect the quality and integrity of their product. All take steps to provide products that are safe and secure to the end user. To improve on this and drive a better business outcome, companies must first realize why crises in packaging occur, and then take steps to prevent them in the future. There are several factors that all manufacturers should consider in building a defense against packaging failures. First, review the packaging and manufacturing process. Second, address the human error factor. Finally, review the supply chain and ensure that raw materials and value-added products that contribute to your food product are meeting international standards.

Contamination and mislabeling risks at the packaging manufacturing stage are often overlooked because the emphasis on food safety usually lies in the preparation of the food itself. Food safety management systems, however, can only do so much to protect end users. The only way to shore up defenses against an outbreak and mitigate any failures in packaging labeling is to review and prepare against the factors at play in the packaging process, and ensure that manufacturing practices are adhering to all safety and quality standards.

Types of Asbestos

There are six type of widely known Asbestos. And each type belonged to one of the two category which are :
Out of the all the asbestos, there is only one that goes under the group of Serpentine, more known as the “White Asbestos”. This category of asbestos has a structured and curly fibers.
Despite being only a only one Asbestos in the group Chrysolite’s are the most used Asbestos in the world.
  • Chrysolite is commonly utilized for Gaskets, Cement , Insulation, Brake Pads, Brake Linings, Joint Compound and Roofing Materials.
All the other 5 types of Asbestos belong to the Amphibole group. This group of asbestoshas a long chain-like structure of fibers that are sharp and straight and easy to inhale.
  • Amosite Asbestos known as the “brown” asbestos, not used nowadays but was once second mostly commonly used Asbestos.
  • Crocidolite Asbestos known as the “blue” asbestos has a much harder and more brittle than other types of the mineral and can break easily.
  • Anthophyllite Asbestos is one of the rarest types of asbestos and does not have a long history of commercial use. Traces of anthophyllite may be present in talc and related products such as talcum powder.
  • Tremolite Asbestos are strong, flexible, heat-resistant, and can be spun and woven into cloth in which makes it useful for commercial uses.
  • Actinolite Asbestos is an asbestos who’s mostly dark coloured. Typically used with the similar mineral vermiculite, which expands when heated. Can be found to be used as construction materials, for gardening, insulation, fireproofing etc.
Despite having different types of existing Asbestos. It is undeniable that all of them present a health risk. Each from the other may present different risks and may require different levels of exposure for the worker to be in harm but it not possible to avoid the risks as long as a worker is exposed to any type of Asbestos at a workplace.

Asbestos Regulations

Long exposure to asbestos fibers may cause serious and dire illnesses such malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis (a type of pneumoconiosis) and other unwanted diseases. For some getting sick from Asbestos may be unavoidable however the chances of being one may be reduced through careful guidelines. With that in mind it is very important that people follow the health and safety regulations that has been set for workers who will likely have long exposure with Asbestos.
Health And Safety 2012 No. 632, The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 indicates that the employers must ensure that the employees who work for them the exposure to asbestos of employees that it must be clear from the risk assessment that the exposure to asbestos of any employee will not exceed the control limit.
The regulations also state that it is important even for non-licensed  workers who will be exposed to Asbestos must have documents and records for work. They must also be under a health surveillance of a Doctor.
The regulations implied that if a certain workforce want to do any building or maintenance work in premises, or on plant or equipment that might contain asbestos, they need to identify where it is and its type and condition; assess the risks, and manage and control these risks.
Employers and employees alike have their own responsibilities to make sure that despite the  health risks that the Asbestos exposure gives employers should have minimized risk through following the set health regulation . It is not only a legal obligation everybody has to follow but also a morale one. It is very important that employers give the their employees the best  environment, equipment and training necessary to minimize risks of harm and death. Employees as well are responsible for themselves to ensure to follow the following guidelines for their own safety.

Asbestos Survey

For the past 150 years. Asbestos has been widely used for many useful purposes and applications. Despite that even as long as we started using Asbestos, the amount of cases of medical illnesses and deaths caused by heavy exposure to it has been there all along.
The more common health diseases that are caused by Asbestos exposure are :
Malignant Mesothelioma  is a cancer that starts in cells in the linings of certain parts of the body, especially in the linings of the chest or abdomen. Typically appear several decades after an exposure to asbestos
Mesothelioma Claimed More Than 37,000 Lives in the United States From 1999 to 2013. The rate of mesotheliomas in the United States increased from the 1970s to the early 1990s, but since then it has leveled off and even gone down slightly.
Each year there are 2000 to 3000 new cases of Malignant Mesothelioma .
Lung Cancer is also another type of cancer which is caused by overblown exposure to Asbestos. National Cancer institute first confirmed that asbestos causes lung cancer in 1942. Most asbestos-related lung cancers take between 15 and 35 years to develop from the time of initial asbestos exposure.
Other causes of death has also occurred with the exposure of Asbestos as of 2013 deaths from asbestosis without mention of mesothelioma are around 477 (Asbestosis register 2013).
On average, 40 percent of pleural mesothelioma patients survive at least one year after starting treatment. By year five, survival drops to 8 percent. Research shows that men are exposed to asbestos more often. One study reported that 13.4 percent of women survive for five years after treatment, compared to only 4.5 percent of men.
It is very clear that no matter what studies are done. Asbestos exposure is dangerous and even sometimes the problems of it occurs around later of somebodies life. While the usage of Asbestos is unavoidable, minimizing the risks it brings is certainly doable with careful following of the regulations of the matter, lives that may have been lost might be saved.
