Abrasive Wheel Regulations in UK



Abrasive wheels is a grinding wheel is a wheel composed of an abrasive compound and used for various grinding (abrasive cutting) and abrasive machining operations. Such wheels are used in grinding machines.

Just like many other occupation available abrasive wheels remains one of the dangerous kind of work along with Working at Heights and construction work as one of the few who have danger involved in the work, these also has regulation and law to minimize the danger on the employees who will involve themselves in such work just like Abrasive wheel work.

In the UK, the law Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), in which The PUWER 1998 legislation replaced the 1992 regulations and seeks to address, control and prevent workers risk of injury and death from equipment they use during the course of their jobs. In addition to the requirements laid out in the PUWER legislation equipment used for lifting (such as fork lifts) is also subject to the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. PUWER covers all work equipment from office furniture through to complex machinery and company cars and is also applicable if a company allows a worker to use their own equipment in the work place.

PUWER requires that equipment provided for use at work is:

  • Must be fully functional for its intended use
  • The equipment must be safe to use, on top condition for safe use and double checked.
  • The equipment should only be used by those who are fully trained for it.
  • Accompanied by suitable health and safety measures, such as protective devices and controls. These will normally include emergency stop devices, adequate means of isolation from sources of energy, clearly visible markings and warning devices
